Cholera Response Update
Cholera is still an issue in the Pignon area and still accounts for at least some of the people HAFF staff transports to the hospital. Thankfully, most of the cases are not in the immediate Bohoc/LaJeune area, but are in a few other surrounding areas.
Several months ago, a local government official, Fr Kerlange Toussaint, who is married to former IPB student and nurse Philomene Monard, came to HAFF to ask for help for a project they thought would help protect families in the area.
They had learned that there were buckets available at a reasonable cost in Hinche, a city 14 miles south of the HAFF campus. The buckets come with covers, a spigot at the bottom and a five-month supply of a chlorine product to treat water for drinking and then to keep it clean. Mme Kerlange likes this system since it keeps people from dipping dirty cups or hands into clean water and there is no filter to break. HAFF had already partnered with a Tallahassee, Florida church to provide water filters for the members of the HAFF ministry team. God's gracious provision for our area permitted funds from that same church to provide first 200 buckets and then, at the end of March, 400 more.
The first of April, Greg and Barb, Carla and Connie were privileged to travel with Fr and Mme Kerlange and their helpers to distribute about 20 buckets in an area near the Bouyaha River northwest of HAFF. Mme Kerlange proved herself to be a wonderful trainer as she simply and clearly explained how to treat water and how to use the buckets. The distribution started with greetings, prayer and a devotion. Mme Kerlange gave her explanation, the buckets were handed out, photos were taken and the time ended with more prayer. Fr and Mme Kerlange already have lists of people to receive the rest of the 400 buckets. Please pray that the buckets and cholera training that HAFF and others have been able to provide would help keep people healthy and save lives. Pray also that people would give their lives to Jesus Christ, the Source of Living Water, as they also learn how to treat drinking water.
