Roads

This is National Route 3 in Thomond, Haiti about 25 miles south of HAFF. Notice it is paved. There are sidewalks. This is new. In the last 25 years, there has been talk many times about paving National Route 3 from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien. Finally, it appears to becoming a reality. When HAFF's driver Elizert Vilbon came to Port-au-Prince to pick up Greg, Barb, Carla, Connie and Rhoda in March, it took an unprecedented 3 hours to drive to HAFF. 25 years ago, it took four-and-a-half hours. In more recent years, with the deterioration of the dirt road, it has taken as many as 10 hours to make the 80-plus mile trip.

A paved road will bring much change to the Bohoc/LaJeune area. People will be able to get their products to market much more quickly and easily. They will also be able to bring in items for sale much more easily. Government services will be more accessible. Hospital runs will be faster and less tormenting to sick, laboring or injured bodies. More public transportation will be available as Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien traffic will most likely shift to the shorter interior route from the longer coastal one. Traffic will thereby increase and move much faster, even than it does now. Motorcycle accidents will be more serious (and possibly more frequent) than they are now. Please pray that the plans for paving National Route 3 through Bohoc and LaJeune (right by the HAFF gate) will include sidewalks like the ones in Thomond. And please pray that the road will bring more positive change than harm.
