Piecing Baby Quilts

After the placemats on the first day, the women learned a labor-saving trick of sewing larger squares together and then cutting them to make smaller squares of bi-colored triangles. Now with a stack of 35 bi-colored squares each woman was ready to choose from a variety of piecing patterns they could use for making baby quilts.

The quilt blocks of two triangles on the front 9 possible patterns for putting 35 blocks
sewed to a back square of one color with
batting sandwiched in between.

At first we just laid down the pieces we had sewn in a haphazard pattern of 5 by 7 rows. The excitement grew as all participated in turning pieces in order to form a coherent pattern. No one expected the joy that was felt by the Haitian women as they saw all the pieces come together to form one overall pattern. Someone remarked, “Indeed we are created in the image of God! This must have been something like what God felt when he finished each day of creation and stood back and saw that his handiwork was good.”
What a sense of accomplishment to have finished our first baby quilt! Two out of three machines had failed to see us through the whole project. Thankfully another team has given enough money to fix up several of HAFF’s older machines. Hopefully these can get into action in time to still be used for this year’s Godly Women’s 9 month class.

Here are the four quilts that the group pieced together and quilted. The squares were sewn together in such a way that the edges stuck out leaving a soft, fringe around each small square.
What a fitting culmination to our time of restoration in the loving arms of God.
