Play Ball!

Hosting a group of high school and college students at HAFF meant our Haitian IPB students were able to spend time with their American peers. One of the ways they interacted was through sports.
The team brough wiffle bats and balls to
teach our Haitian students baseball.

It didn't take long for the Haitian students to catch on!

Eventually, even Derold, the HAFF team coordinator, got in on the action. Everyone involved had a ton of fun.
After every one was worn out from baseball, the group broke into pairs and prayed for the IPB school. Then the students sat in the school yard and shared their testimonies with the help of a translator. This was a great chance for our students to practice their English, while the American visitors were able to gain a perspective on what it's like to be a Christian student in Haiti. One of our Haitian students said he wanted to be a doctor "to help my family and my country." This statement effected one of our visitors deeply - he said it changed his perspective on his own studies as a pre-med student, causing him to realize his calling had a deeper purpose. Now, these two young men have a bond that will last for years. This time together helped our IPB students to gain confidence in speaking English and it encouraged the visiting students to look at their lives through a new lens.

To end their time together guitars were brought out and the Haitian students led a worship time.

We love seeing visitors and Haitians build friendships here at HAFF - for this group sports served as a great tool to break the ice and find common ground. We hope visitors continue to bring fresh skills and talents to HAFF to help them build relationships with Haitians.

Thanks to April Lambiotte for this story and for the photos.
